In Hamlets soliloquy at the end of Act II, Hamlet
initially chastises himself for his hesitation in seeking
to avenge his fathers murder at the hands of King
Claudius. ... " Hamlet wants to be
completely sure that the ghost of his father was being
truthful with him.
Although Hamlet has in fact delayed, he should not be held responsible for it.
Because of the death of his father, his mothers almost immediate marriage to his uncle,
Claudius refusal of his request to return to the University at Wittenberg, Polonius
forbidding Ophelia to associate with Hamlet, the questioning of the relationship between
his parents, and the denial of his rightful claim to the throne, Hamlet has been too
distressed in this interval to plan logical action.
