Rebel without a cause Jim Starks rebellion

... This is evident in the characters of Jim Stark (James Dean) and his father (Jim Backus) in the film Rebel Without a Cause (Nicolas Ray, 1955.) Released in the mid-fifties, Rebel illustrated America’s belief that it was essential to re-domesticate men and women thus entirely transforming the family structure. On the surface, Jim appears to be a confused teenager who has a liking for trouble. However, upon examination of his situation, it is obvious that there is a cause to his rebellion. That cause is his lack of a male role model. Although it seems that Jim’s rebellion stems from social deviance, Jim’s reaction to his fathers’ verbal response to his confession regarding the “chickie run” demonstrates where his true frustrations lie. When Jim explains that he participated in the “chickie run,” his mother immediately responds with panic. She badgers Jim with a couple of belittling remarks until Jim’s father is able to interject with, “Will you let him tell it?
