1) All organisms contribute to their environment in one way or another, whether they are in abundance or not. As we saw in the lecture on keystone species, the removal of the Pisaster starfish from its natural environment reduced species diversity dramatically. The remaining species were not kept in check and therefore eliminated other species by competitive exclusion. 2) Mutualisms are essential for the survival of life on Earth. Plants wouldn't be able to depend on organisms to assist in seed dispersal and the diversity of plant life would decrease. In effect, there would be less plants for herbivores to eat and they would also decrease. The cycle would go on with carnivores until species diversity was wiped out completely. 3) Humans are much more destructive to their environment than is widely believed. The inhabitants of Easter Island showed that pride was more important to them than conserving the few remaining trees in their habitat.
