Character Analysis · Clym Yeobright- This is the main character in the novel. His personal conflicts and struggles are the core of the novel’s plot. The journey he takes to Paris and back to Egdon Heath allude to the title “Return of the Native”. There are more problems that occur with his personal life because of Paris. Clym is quick-tempered and religious. He is also very clever and intelligent. A characteristic that may have hurt him is his fierce determination. It was the reason he eventually split with his own mother and lastly Eustacia, his wife. After blaming himself for their deaths, he slips into a state of worship and becomes a preacher. At the end of his life, evolves a degenerative eye condition and he ends his life in his native home. · Eustacia Vye- She is eventually the wife of Clym. After being uprooted from her home in Boston, she moves to the heath to live with her grandfather, Captain Vye. She truly despises the heath and yearns to leave to a more adventurous place.
