Banner in the Sky Essay Who is the better guide? Franz Lerner or Emil Saxo? Throughout the book there is a distinct rivalry between the mountaineering villages of Kurtal and Broli. As Captain Winter said “Broli – Kurtal. Kurtal – Broli. One of you is as bad as the other; as stupid as the other. Fighting about your villages.” (Ramsey Ullman, James – Pg. 171) However through the midst of the rivalry between the climbing villages, one of them stands out the most in the book. This rivalry of course is between Franz Lerner the best guide of Kurtal, versus Emil Saxo the best guide of Broli. The intense competition between the two gets to a climax nearer to the end of the novel. This competition between the two is for recognition as the best guide in the Alps. It is an extremely hard decision to make when it comes to deciding this matter, and using my judgement, I believe Franz Lerner comes out on top of Emil Saxo when it come to being a guide on mountaineering expeditions. I would also like to give you a bit of information on each guide in order to support the decision that I have made.
