What really defines an artist? Is it how many paintings they paint; how famous they are among the public; how rich they are? The answer? None of the above. An artist is someone who is passionate about what they do; someone who has a gift, shares it with others, and creates a legacy; someone who makes an impact on the people they come in contact with. It’s one who is selfless and gives back; one who is hard working and has a dream; one whose level of excellence and artistry is widely acknowledged within their peer group and industry. One fine example of an artist is producer and songwriter David Foster. This man has received immeasurable recognition for his connoisseur piano playing, song writing, and musicianship. David Foster is a name unknown to the masses, but is revered and recognized among his colleagues and the entire music industry. Foster, who has his own unique observations on this subject, is an artist because he had a dream of excellence and made it come true, has impacted many aspiring musicians, and has been a generous and philanthropic role model throughout his entire career. David Foster, 52, is considered one of the most successful and influential producers in the pop music culture today and has countless achievements. “Foster is a 14-time Grammy Award winner with unprecedented 42 nominations” (Anka). Throughout his career, David has sold over 200 million records (Anka). “Foster, born 1950 in Victoria, British Colombia, began playing the piano at age five and hasn’t stopped since then” (Anka). “His talented fingers led him to Britain at age 16 to play keyboards with Chuck Berry, which in and of itself is an extraordinary recognition at such an early age”. “When Foster moved back to British Columbia he formed a band called Skylark” (Cronin). No matter what was going on in David’s life, music was his passion and catharsis. He thought if he could express himself through his music, other people could relate to his passion.
