The Talented Mr. Ripley is about a troubled young man that has the ability to impersonate other people. Because the mood of the film changes over the course of Tom Ripleys journey in the film, the editing style and imagery changes through the movie. In the very beginning when we actually see the "real" Tom Ripley. ... Because he is seen as an incomplete or fragmented person, there are fragments of the frames used in the editing transitions. ... He is in awe of Dickie, and the editing goes back and forth between Tom in his seat and Dickie on the stage. ... Using this editing imagery, this shows Toms idolization of Dickie even though Tom says no words in the scene at all.
