The Magyars were a pagan Finno-Ugric tribe, which developed in central Russia and spoke a language that over the course of time evolved into modern Hungarian. In other words the Hungarian nation today, traces its origins to the Magyars. Historians believe that the Magyars were a nomadic people who hunted various animals and lived in tents, as they moved from location to location. To be specific it is believed that the Magyars first migrated east from Russia, then south, in which they came in contact with Turks and Iranians. ...
In the fifth century AD the Magyars split as a whole. Some tribes migrated west to the Don River, while other tribes happened to migrate south to the Caucasus Mountains During this period of time, the Magyars became a semi-sedentary people who survived by raising cattle and sheep, planting crops, and fishing. ...
In 889, the Magyars under their leader Arpad, fled the Turkic steppe race known as the Pechenegs and ended up finding themselves in the middle of a war between Byzantium and Bulgaria.
The Byzantines bribed the Magyars to attack the Bulgars, which they did successfully at first. Unfortunately, however, the Bulgarian King Symeon made an alliance with the Pechenegs, who ended up driving the Magyars up the Danube valley into present-day Hungary. This area was really under Frankish rule, but had been sparsely populated since Charlemagne’s destruction of the Avar state in 803 and the Magyars were able to move in without any opposition. The Frankish Emperor Arnulf even found the Magyars to be very useful in stopping a very irritating vassal. However, this would prove to be a bad mistake as the Magyars gained more strength virtually every passing day.
