The movie Carrie, directed by Brian de Palma, is the story of a teenage girl with telekinetic powers, Carrie White, who is desperately trying to fit into her high school community. From the beginning of the movie we see that Carrie is far from being accepted by her peers. In the first scene we see Carrie’s gym class playing volleyball and the game ends when Carrie misses the ball and causes her team to lose. The other girls are incredibly mean to her as they all make comments such as, “You eat shit” and “We can’t win with Carrie.” Later, we also see a teacher who is not kind to Carrie. ... Carrie greatly wants to belong, and her quest to fit in is aided through the help of her gym teacher, Miss Collins, and fellow students, Sue Snell and Tommy Ross. They try help Carrie’s self-confidence grow and to help her feel accepted by the other students. However, Carrie eventually destroys the community she wishes to be a part of and ultimately she destroys herself, because of her oppressively religious mother and because of the cruelty of some fellow students.
The gym teacher, Miss Collins, helps Carrie try to fit in with her peers by becoming a motherly figure to her. She protects Carrie from the harassment of her peers and helps boost her self confidence. When Carrie gets her period for the first time and all the girls make fun of her and throw tampons and pads at her, Miss Collins immediately runs over to try to help Carrie. ... ” She admits that she understands how the other girls felt when Carrie freaked out about her period.
