The cold, lifeless room was in shades of dull grey. Books were strewn all over the floor, while dirty clothes lay all over the room. The bed was in a mess, with blankets and pillows all mixed up together. There she lay, on her ever so messy bed. Her hair was in knots, and her face had two visible streaks on it. Still wearing her crumpled school uniform, she lay lifelessly on the bed, staring into the blank and empty space… She laid there for the whole night. There was nothing to think about, only a numb sensation and a brooding dread of the continuation of life. What was there to hope or dream for, when the dearest thing to your heart has been taken away from you? With a gentle heave, she fell into a disturbed sleep. * * * When the first rays of sunlight crept into the dark room from the tiny gaps between the heavy Persian curtains, Lydia had already dressed for school. She bathed and combed her hair neatly, changed into a new set of uniform and smoothed every single wrinkle on her pinafore. The familiar aroma of egg and bacon sandwich breakfast was no longer lingering in the house. Neither were her parents. “Egg and bacon are too greasy for my liking anyway,” she convinced herself. Peering into the mirror, she rehearsed the smile she needed in school. Unnaturally, she pulsed her lips, curled her mouth upwards slowly and exposed a set of perfect shiny white teeth. Two dimples materialized on her pale cheeks. She tried the whole process over and over again, until the smile was satisfying. She was ready for another torturing day in school. Lydia got off the packed bus in relief and trudged towards the unwelcoming school. Like a menacing bully trying to extort, it gave a sinister grin and swallowed students up. “Hey Lydia! Wait for me!” Without turning around, she could recognize the voice of Jane the class chairperson. Lydia felt a heavy pat on her left shoulder as the breathless girl caught up.
