When some people think about capital punishment and the death penalty, visions of
the electric chair and the Old West hangings will jump into their minds. ... Many people are for the death
penalty, with probably an equal amount of people who are against the death penalty.

As of November 7, 2003, the United States has executed 60 prisoners in the year
2003, reported by the Death Penalty Information Center (2003, Article 464). ... According to
these statistics, executions have not been racially prejudiced towards minorities this
year due to the fact that 63% of executions were white prisoners and minority prisoners
accounted for only 37% of the executions.
The group Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty reported that the state of
Georgia, as of June 2003, has 117 prisoners on Death row (2003). ... Since 1976, the state of Georgia has

not racially prejudice towards minorities. ... The same report stated that:
At yearend 2001, 37 States and the Federal prison system held 3,557 prisoners
under the sentence of death, 20 fewer than at yearend 2001. ... Of persons under sentence of death in 2001: 1,931 were white (54%), 1,554 were black (43%), 33 were Asian (1%), 27 were Native American (1%), and 12 were of unknown race (1%).
