The Diction and Detail of the Gettysburg Adress

Lincoln’s diction mostly honors the brave men who sacrificed their lives to ensure the prosperity of the country in the future, such as the founding fathers. The founding fathers started this nation, “conceived in liberty”, now the next generation has to fight on the “great battlefield” dedicating a portion of that battlefield to the people who “gave their lives that the nation might live”. When he mentions that the country was born in liberty, he does not mean that it was free from the start, he means that after the Revolutionary War, a new nation of freedom was born. The great battlefield is not a place, but a challenge to the nation to see if their forefather’s sacrifice was not in vain, explaining why a portion was dedicated to them.
