... According to Grendel though, a hero is not the best thing to be. When Grendel meets Unferth for the first time they connect in a special way. Unferth understands Grendel and Grendel understands Unferth.
Grendel describes a hero as having a “terrible burden…everyone is watching you, weighing you, seeing if you’re still heroic.” Grendel does not understand why Unferth acts so nobly and honorable when he is trying to attack him. Grendel knows, however, that the reason there are heroes is because there is a monster to fight against. ... When Grendel talks to Unferth and he is able to understand him, Grendel decides to have a conversation with him about heroism. Grendel tells him about what he thinks the pros and cons of being a hero are.
