Carol Ann Duffy?s ?Warming Her Pearls? is a powerfully written poem that tells a story of contrasts. The story is told by a servant using simple language. Nowhere in the poem do we hear the mistress?s voice; all information and communication comes through the servant?s voice. The servant is the audience as well. The poem is a wistful musing . The language is smooth and languid. While the poet uses simple adjectives, her use of alliteration: ??wear them, warm them?? (2), ??whilst I work willingly?? (7), ??soft blush seep through her skin?.? (14), is powerful, and carries the reader slowly but confidently from stanza to stanza. Ms. Duffy?s use of words like bids (2), whilst (7), and looking-glass (15), and the mention of a carriage (17) as a means of transportation, suggest that, while the poet is contemporary, the poem takes place in an earlier period. Having been educated in England, this is likely the setting for this poem. England was well known for its rigid class structure.
