Many Challenges of Scarlett OHara

...
Scarlett O’ Hara misled many people, which resulted in much heartbreak for her later. The Tarleton twins, Stuart and Brent, did not realize that throughout their courtship of Scarlett, her heart was set on the betrothed Ashley Wilkes. When Scarlett came to terms with the reality that he was not going to leave his bride, Melanie Hamilton, she impetuously accepted the proposal of Melanie’s awkward brother, Charles. Shortly after, Charles died of the measles while away at war, leaving Scarlett pregnant and with the stigma and constraints of a young widow. ... When her new husband was killed while fighting for Scarlett’s dignity, she was left widowed once more, this time with the added burden of a guilty conscience. ... Although this fondness eventually developed into love, Scarlett’s final betrothal did not endure; Rhett left her, saying that his love for her had ebbed with time and he no longer felt that they were suitable for one another.
