... Genesis provides Christians with an explanation. ...
Taking a conservative perspective, two doctrines have arisen to aid the understanding of the importance of Adam and Eve; Original Sin and Inherited Sin. Original Sin would be understood as the first sin committed by Adam and Eve which caused the fall of the human race and Inherited Sin which is the sin everyone inherits from Adam and Eve. Roman Catholics also believe in Actual Sin which is sin committed in thought, word or deed. But, of course, more liberal Christians who do not believe that Adam and Eve were historical figures also do not believe in Original or Inherited Sin.
Literalist Christians would say that these are why we are the way we are, original sin passed through our genes from the first people. ... But if the human condition is defined as ‘sin, alienation, suffering and death,’ how can sin both be part of and the cause of the human condition? This implies a circular trap – we sin because we are sinful, and we are sinful because we sin.
An essential aspect of the Fall of Man, regardless of interpretation is that we sin because of our own free will.
