The film, Ghost World, may well be easily considered on anti-Hollywood coming of age story. It could be suggested that the film itself represents good art but bad sociology; “good art” being that which challenges, images that startle or shock, to change ways of thinking – the representation of a contrived state of being. The term “sociology” referring to the science or study of the origin, history and constitution of human society. Sociology itself tries to portray an accurate picture of society, in a sense a picture of reality. However, Ghost World is a non-stop critique of American society as a consumer theme park where people are obsessed with kitsch and inauthentic experiences. ... Ghost World, then, could be said to be good art and good sociology.
The title Ghost World is never actually explained in the film, the only obvious connection in the film is that it denotes something particularly melancholic and a little heart breaking. The name itself suggests an unreal world; it is an indication that the film will take in a primary artistic feel, it will not use reality as its technique. Ghost World as a concept suggests that the real world itself is a surface, it has little meaning for people.
