The Blue Hotel, by Stephen Crane, unravels a tragic story motivated by fear. Three men arrive at a hotel to stay; amongst them, the Swede becomes distinguished by his fear and immediately becomes an outsider. He is despised by the hotel keeper and his son as well as the cowboy guest. ...
Johnny, the Swede, demonstrates his fear from the very beginning when Scully, the hotel keeper, urges him to wash his hands. His caution upon acting on Scully’s words revealed hesitancy and fear in obeying the hotel keeper. His action, however, only raises quizzical eyebrows and nothing more until he began to rant about dying in the hotel.
