The history of Iraq dates back to the earliest civilizations Mesopotamia. ... During WWI, Turkey entered on Germany’s side and Britain invaded Iraq. By October 1918 Iraq was fully under British rule. In July 1920 Iraq became a kingdom with a government of Arab officials under the supervision of a British high commissioner. Turkey tried to reclaim the land and Britain was forced to maintain an army in Iraq. Iraq’s king, King Faisal, requested that Britain’s mandate over Iraq switched to an alliance between the two countries. ... In 1932 British mandate was terminated and Iraq became a free state. All through the thirties Iraq worked on developing its oil economy.
In September 1939, according to its treaty with Britain, Iraq broke off diplomatic relations with Germany. In 1940 however, Iraq rebelled Britain.
