Al Hulstedt Professor McKeever 3-7-03 Matthew 1-2 SUMMARY: In these two chapters Matthew describes the birth of Jesus and the lineage of Jesus. He explains that there are 14 generations between all important dates in the history of Israel. He also explains that Joseph and Mary had to flee from Bethlehem to Egypt. It also tells of what happens after Joseph and Mary returned to Galilee. OBSERVATIONS: I think that Matthew felt it important to include the lineage right away because it gives us the needed background to understand the times. In what he said he told us that it is a dominantly male ran society and that the people feel that where you came from is just as important as were you are going. Matthew 3-4 SUMMARY: Here the author is telling us events of John the Baptist. He tells us of a scene in which John is talking to the Pharisees and Sadducees about a man to come who John is not worthy to baptize but will and does. Matthew goes on to tell us about Jesus’ first temptation and greatest temptation by the devil. Here the world is offered to Jesus but it is turned down with a quote from the OT. In chapter 4 it is also told of how the first of the disciples were “recruited.” The healing of all has now begun. OBSERVATIONS: With John being mentioned so early it tells us that this is a very important man and that he has done and will do some very important things. Not just anybody can baptize the Messiah, but John can, very important man. Now Jesus has a few followers and is ready to become the man he was born to be, the almighty savior and healer. Matthew 5-6 SUMMARY: Jesus now delivers the Sermon on the Mount. In which he discusses matters of grave importance to him and the kingdom of God. First is the ideal of the poor are rich in the eyes of God and the rich are poor. Second the place that we all have as christians in the kingdom of God, salt of the earth, light of the world. Jesus' third move is to give us the Lord's prayer. He tells us to pray it in secret and out of the public eye. He finally mentions that we do not need any material things, but if we ask for them in faith theywill be given to us. These things will only be awarded to us if they are taken to do the will of God and not the will of the earth. OBSERVATIONS: Jesus has given us alot of the key factors within a very short time of his preaching. He wastes no time and this tells us alot. He lives be example and tells us and shows us everything. By comeing out and saying it he shows us that we need to be straight to the point as well. He also tells me many of the key points to my view of the christian world. Do not judge, Do not covet, and most important, HAVE FAITH at all times. MATTHEW 8-10 SUMMARY: Jesus comes off the munt only to continue his message. He immediately begins healing people and continues to preach to them of the things that he has just mentioned. Here Jesus says the only thing that can be proven he said "let the dead bury their own dead." Jesus now boards a boat and upon landing is greeted by two demonic spirts that he casts into a herd of swine.
