The Genesis Flood Controversy
This paper will look at the longstanding controversy concerning the flood that occured in the time of Noah and whether that flood was universal or local in nature. In looking back through biblical history, it would be hard to find an account that has been criticized more frequently than that of the universal flood. ... ” Many fundamental discoveries in science were made, and there was a genuine spirit of recognition of the validity of the Genesis story of creation and the Flood as a background for science. ... Clark; (1968) Fossils, Flood and Fire pp. 17-18)
Religionists from the past and present have criticized the global nature of the flood. They have put forth the thought that there is no way to support the idea of a worldwide flood and no evidence found supporting this idea either. ... Buffaloe in the 1980’s all have held to the view that the flood spoken of in the book of Genesis was local in nature. Hugh Ross, a proponent of the local flood and a progressive creationist made this statement concerning the flood:
I kind of read through the text and it seemed obvious to me that it had to be a local flood, not a global flood, and I was shocked to discover that there are all these Christians, and even Christian scholars, that held to a global flood. ... In looking at this question about whether the flood was local or universal, the first source that should be consulted is the Bible and not some secular textbook. In studying the story of the Flood in Scritpture it is important to note that more attention is given to the Flood than was given to creation. Four of the first eleven chapters of Genesis speak of the flood.
The Flood was also the greatest event that has happened since the beginning of creation and is many times referred to in other books of the Old and New Testament showing that there was a historical event that occurred. ... As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man, for in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. ... ” This Scritpure could be cited to support the universal view in that just as the return of Christ will be a universal event and the flood is compared to the impact of Christ’s return, so the flood was a universal event. Other Scriptures that speak of the flood are 1 Peter 3:18-22, Hebrews 11:7, and 2 Peter 3:5-7.
The fact must be stated also that many of the scientists that were respected in the past accepted the flood as being universal and many of the earth’s features were attributed to the Flood. With this in mind it is important to note that as the evolutionary teaching has become popular, many no longer hold to the universal view of the flood and more recent researchers hold to the local view.
The first view that will be discussed is the view that the flood was a local flood.
