In puritanical times women would be killed if they had a baby as the result of adultery or out of wedlock. Hester Prynne’s life was spared when she committed adultery. She was punished by having to stand on a scaffold with her baby while the whole town watched. After she was forced to wear a scarlet “A” on the chest of her shirt. The father of Hester’s baby and the other half of the sin was the Reverend Dimmesdale. Hester’s husband, who called himself Roger Chilingworth, arrived from England just in time to see his wife standing on the scaffold. He told Hester to tell no one that he was her husband, for fear of being called a cuckold, and because he wanted vengeance on the man who had committed adultery. All three of these people, Roger Chillingworth, Hester Prynne, and Reverend Dimmesdale suffer immensely over Hester and Reverend Dimmesdales sin. Of the three people Roger Chilling worth, Hester’s husband suffers the least. When he first arrives he is embarrassed and feels bad, although he admits he took advantage of Hester a little. He thought he married her when she was too young and he was too old.
