Ernest Hemingway wrote A Farewell to Arms not only for entertainment, but to impress his ideas into the minds of millions of people all over the world. Frederic Henry, the main character of the novel, parallels the life and beliefs of Hemingway. Ernest Hemingway illustrates his principles and positions on numerous subjects through Frederic Henry, Catherine Barkley, and the other characters of A Farewell to Arms.
Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois (Dupuis). ... When Hemingway was young, his mother, Grace Hemingway often dressed him as a girl. Grace was the head of the Hemingway household and his father committed suicide because of the treatment he received from Grace (Kuda). ... Hemingway was injured on July 8, 1918, at Fossalta di Piave, “invented character” (Scott 108). Even with Hemingway himself denying it, the similarities between the two are hard to ignore.
