Termites and the Scientific Method
Step #1 Make Observations
When we first put the termites on the paper, one of them wasn’t moving, which made us think he was deceased. ... We felt that this action showed that the termites have some sort of communication skills between each other. When we began drawing the lines on the paper the termites initially avoided them. ...
Step #2 Develop the Hypothesis
“The termites will follow a blue marker line longer then they will follow a line drawn by a crayon or a pen.”
We based this hypothesis on the observation of the termites responding to the smell of the lines, and because the marker has a stronger smell then the pen or crayon they will follow the marker longer.
Step #3 Design an Experiment
Supplies
3 pieces of paper
1 blue crayon
1 blue marker
1 blue pen
1 ruler
3 termites
Step #1
Draw one 15 cm line on each piece of paper using the crayon on one, the pen on another and the marker on the last.
