How Civil War Soldiers Fought
To understand how and why soldiers fought, one must first realize that every man who joined up did so for a reason. Either he wanted to fight for his side’s cause, he didn’t want to look like a coward, his whole town went, maybe it was family, or maybe he was just simply forced to go by the draft, but most men went off to war. Of the millions that went to war, hundreds of thousands would never come back to the places they left from. Civil War fighting is not fighting, as we know it today. ... Local volunteer companies defined the character of Civil War armies and soldiers. ... The war disrupted traditional race, class, and gender relationships and trampled on white mens civil liberties. ... Early in the war, when infantry used smoothbore muskets, defenders did not start shooting until attackers came within 50 yards. ... It wasn’t until later in the war, the rifle barreled musket and minie bullets were developed that fighting became less hand to hand and from further away.
Advanced tactics came to light mid way through the war, when the use of Napoleonic strategy was used. The tendency of assaulting troops under weak command control to lose momentum and stall into an indecisive but killing firefight was of great concern during the Civil War and later.
