Serial Music Notes for AS level students who have not encountered the style before! 1) Serialism was developed by Arnold Schoenberg and his followers, Berg and Webern. 2) The main features is the constant and exclusive use of a set of notes called the TONE ROW 3) A TONE ROW contains all the 12 chromatic notes of an octave arranged in a different order for a each composition. 4) Resulting from his knowledge of contrapuntal music, Schoenberg added 3 rows to his ‘set’ which are derived from the Original 12 notes. They are the Retrograde (backwards) the Inversion (upside down) and the Retrograde Inversion. 5) Additionally, all 4 versions of the row can be transposed 11 (more) times (by a semitone each time) to generate to complete set of 48 versions of the “Prime set” 6) It may be best to use the word PRIME set rather than Original, because the labels for the transpositions of the 4 rows mentioned in point s 4) & 5) above are, for example, RI1, I2, O4 and R6, where O0 might be a little confusing; P0 is less confusing.
