Tensions often escalate between parties to the point that war is inevitable because their differences are too great. In the early 1800’s, disagreements over slavery began to separate the northern and southern states of the US. Economic and social differences, as a result of slavery, fueled the tensions between the north and south, which ultimately led to the Civil War. The southern states relied heavily on slave labor to produce their main source of income, cotton. The use of slaves allowed the plantation owners to mass-produce goods without high labor costs. The people who occupied the southern states quickly adapted to this lifestyle and became dependent on it.
