History has always been a controversial subject matter for me. I never really understood the significance of knowledge of history, much more having to study it. As they say, past is past so why should we dwell on things that are over and done with. As was assigned to us, I watched the movie “Dead Poets Society” and sought to find a better understanding of what history has to do with my life. The movie was about a group of young men struggling with the pressures of preparatory school. With the help of a teacher, whose way of thinking was different from the rest of the school, they were able to seize the day, “Carpe Diem.” Watching the movie shed the light on my confusions. It made me see how history and the present are tied together, where history is an unbreakable, inescapable continuum where we will always have a role in its unfolding. The movie started off by showing the audience the different kinds of pressures on the students. This aspect of the movie serves as evidence of how history comes to haunt the present. Todd, played by Ethan Hawke, was dealing with the pressure of high expectation. His older brother had been the top of his class and because of that his parents, teachers and peers were expecting him to do as well.
