Brandiss Warren (Katie Myers) English AP Bel and the Serpent Reader Response 12/04/03 Once again in this chapter, Barbara Kingsolver builds the tension between two conflicting worlds that have suddenly collided in the African Congo. Kingsolver parallels the tension between Nathan Price’s overbearing mission and the African people with the tension between the Belgiums/Americans and the African people. Both Nathan Price and the Belgiums/American show that they believe that this world belongs to them and that the Genesis 1:28 applied directly to them: “dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” Both groups feel their way is the best way and the only way and seek to move others to their paths of thinking by control. The revolution has especially made the Belgiums/Americans feel their grip on Africa, or more specifically it’s diamonds, may be jeopardized.
