Introduction
The ability to carry out a future intention at some specified time or time based prospective memory is an everyday requirement. ... Its likely that people that experience performance and thinking difficulties are likely to experience frequent failures to carry out prospective memory tasks and several lines of evidence indicate that depression would impair the ability to perform a future task at a specific time. Previous research also suggests that by changing task structure and by reducing the reliance on self-initiated processes, depressed individuals can improve their ability to carry out prospective memory tasks. A research paper written in 1999 by Rude, Hertel, Jarrold, Covich and Hedlund entitled Depression-Related Impairments in Prospective Memory was undertaken determine whether depression does impair the ability to carry out a prospective task where major effort is required to self initiate the activity. Recognizing the fact that depression is an unfortunately common disorder in society, previous studies indicated a correlation between old age and impairment to do time-based prospective tasks. Accordingly, a correlational study was done to establish a link between depression and impairment to carry out a time-based future task (Rude et al 1999). Such a finding would be helpful to further encourage people that suffer from depression to seek treatment.
METHOD
In this study, the independent variable is depression. ... The dependant variable in this study is performance on the memory tests that are being conducted. ... The participants were included in the depressed group if they met the criteria for current major depression. The non-depressed were included into that same category if they currently met the criteria for any of the major affective disorders (Rude et al 1999)
To help find out exactly how depressed the participants were, the Beck Depression Inventory, which is a self-report test, was used (Rude et al 1999).
