... In movies, yes, but in reality, not exactly, according to some Paly students. Parents may worry about the at times false representation of teen parties in movies. ...
“Most party scenes in movies you see teenagers getting drunk [and] having sex,” junior Maddie Mandich says. “But I don’t really think that is how parties are around here. ... ”
According to Mandich, unlike at Paly parties, in movies kids humiliate each other for choosing not to drink. “[At Paly parties] people don’t mind if you really aren’t drinking for the night … In some movies they show the kid being called a loser and being ridiculed.”
Sophomore Melody [] adds, “There’s always a lot more alcohol in the movies than in the real thing. ... “I guess people feel like they have to get drunk at a party because of what they see in the movies.”
Letitia Burton, Living Skills teacher at Paly, says that people who wouldn’t necessarily understand what happens in teens’ social lives are the ones who make these movies. “I think a lot of those teen movies aren’t written by teens, they’re written by, you know, older people, mostly men (probably white men), and it’s like this image of what teenagers do,” Burton says. ... ’ And not to say that if it wasn’t in the movies that kids wouldn’t be doing it – but I think kids would do stuff anyway,” Burton says.
