There have only been a handful of movies that have managed to portray realistically the settings and tones of early American history. Most have been over dramatized, politically affected, or in general have been overshadowed by other movies with spectacular special effects. Bruce Beresford has managed to capture the essence of 17th century life in New France in his 1991 hit Canadian movie “The Black Robe.” This film was a blockbuster hit in Canada. It was nominated for 10 Canadian Film Awards or Genies, as they are more commonly called. The film won six awards of the ten they were nominated at the Canadian Genies, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction. The movie tells the story of a Father Laforgue, a Jesuit French priest, and Daniel, a fellow Frenchman and his only companion. Their mission is to travel to the Huron tribe and convert them to Catholicism. The pair travels up-river with the aid of the Algonquian tribe. Father Laforgue, known to the Algonquian as “Black Robe,” wears a priestly black robe with traditional white collar. When Father Laforgue shows the Algonquian what writing is, they begin to suspect that he is some sort of demon. To confirm their fears, they stop at a nearby sympathetic tribe and speak to the sorcerer there. The sorcerer confirms their beliefs, declaring that an evil demon has possessed Laforgue. On their next rest stop, they abandon the priest and his companion. Daniel gives chase to the departing Algonquian. The natives and the young Frenchman return for Father Laforgue only to be captured by the Iroquois.
