Kenilworth Castle Local Study
Kenilworth castle was built around the 1120’s and IT WAS Geoffrey de Clinton’s. We went to visit Kenilworth Castle on the 19th of June, which was approximately 880 years after it was bult. My first impressions of the castle was that it was slighted, which makes you feel quite disappointed! There were particularly interesting features, such as the huge windows, the extremely tall wall, and I even thought that the staircase was interesting and always wondered what it looked like as I’ve never been in a castle before! With this castle you really have to use your imagination to picture yourself in its prime state. ...
Kenilworth castle was initially built in the 11th century, which means that it was probably just a typical Motte and Bailey wooden castle. There is no evidence to tell us that this is true or to tell us about early Kenilworth castle, because if it was wooden it wouldn’t have lasted through the centuries. Motte and Bailey castles were only temporary anyway, so Kenilworth Castle had improvements many times through the years. If the castle had not got ‘rebuilt’ in stone, we would have had little evidence about it, as wood rots and can be burnt. ... Kenilworth castle is a good example of this. It is to the south-west of Kenilworth. It is on a natural high point over looking the town of Kenilworth at the time. ... When the castle became stone, it seemed almost indestructible to the ‘enemies’ and was a huge focal point to the town.
The Kenilworth keep was quite a typical keep, it was built on a natural rise, overlooking the town. ...
As there were better weapons being invented, the castle walls had to be thick enough to withstand the impact. The walls of the keep at Kenilworth were approximately 3 metres wide and the actual length of the walls were about 33 metres high. ... When the castle became a palace it was no longer a defensive keep, but a domestic keep, so there was no need to have the doorway on the first floor, so it was moved to the ground floor.
