The world was still recovering from the effects of World War II. “The war to end all wars.” After seeing some of the most horrific event in our history 51 nations united in common of preserving peace, through security, and international cooperation. On October 24, 1945, that United Nations (UN) first met. “The United Nations and its family of organization, work to promote respect for human rights, protect the environment, fight disease, foster development, and reduce poverty (“Basic Facts about the United Nations1”). Today the United Nations has 189 state members. Each nation which chouses to become a member agrees to and accepts the obligations of the UN charter as well as the Basic Principles of International Relations. These 189 nations joined together to raise the standards for better living and equal opportunity. The UN is split into six main department which work to, “...provides the means to help resolve international conflicts and formulate policies on matter effecting us all” (“Basic facts about the United Nation”).
