I am going to explore how meaning is created and response generated in a 10 minute sequence from the film Scream. ...
In the opening scene of Scream, when we are in Casey’s house, the mis en scene is important as it sends the audience a message about her lifestyle. ... These both contain generic elements used in Scream, such as the use of the telephone, knife, a masked killer and a woman in distress. ... She screams as she sees her daughter and this could be the same scream that marks the start of the film.
My personal response is that Scream succeeds in creating tension and suspense especially in this opening sequence.
