The Last Samurai was a good movie, it gave it’s viewers a comparison between the Eastern and Western cultures. But the historical events presented, and even the way they portrayed the Samurai were somewhat fallacious. The way they presented the Samurai, as being close to perfection was a bit strange, since based on what I have read and researched, they were not all that noble and gallant. Also, the way the story went, Nathan after being captured, got to know more about the Samurai, so he decided to be one and fight with them. I don’t think anyone can just become a Samurai; in fact, Samurai was a class in Japan, meaning, the only way one can become a Samurai, if one is born in that class (bushi/warrior class). Of course, one can also become a Samurai during the times when movement in class was allowed. Also, I found it absurd that the last samurai is an American, how could Nathan have survived those bullets from the Japanese army, personally, it was unrealistic and an offense to the history of Japanese. ... Also, the way they portrayed the Samurai, fighting with only swords and bows, when according to the history of Japan, during that time, the Samurai were relatively well equipped, meaning they had modern arms.
