In the movie Armageddon produced by Jerry Bruckenheimer, there are many issues concerning communication ethics issues. The movie depicts a story in which a meteor is headed toward the earth, and will destroy the planet if it hits. The director of NASA calls upon a team of oil drillers to fly into space, drill a hole in the meteor and plant explosives inside. At one point in the movie, the drilling team is on the meteor and is having trouble drilling into the meteor. The explosives are linked to a remote detonation device at the space center, and the meteor will be out of range for the remote detonator in a short amount of time. At this point, the president of the United States calls in to the space center with instructions to follow through with a back-up plan of detonating the explosives on the surface of the meteor with everyone still on it. The president overrides the authority of NASA’s director and tries to detonate the bomb. No one was made aware of this back-up plan, and it goes against the advice of the NASA scientists, who say that detonating the explosives on the surface of the meteor will not stop it from hitting the earth. This course of action by the government seems to be highly unethical.
