     In the sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” Jonathan Edwards’ use of figures of speech play a major role in the effectiveness of the piece. Edwards uses fear as a way to stop sin and cause repentance.
     Jonathan Edwards uses a comparison of God’s power to rapids to play on people’s minds so they can visualize that they are on thin ice. For example, “The wrath of God is like great waters…and the longer the stream is stopped, the more rapid and mighty is its course…there is nothing but the mere pleasure of God that holds the waters back,” is an example of Edwards’ use of Imagery. ... ” Edwards’ words really mold the feelings of him audience.
