Helmholtz (1821-1849) pioneered a constructivist approach (also termed traditional cognitivist or top down) to understanding visual perception. This approach views the proximal stimulus as being an inadequate source of information and suggests that various cognitive processes are required to work, using memory constructions as an important source of information, in order for perception to occur. To reiterate, in the words of Gregory (1966):
"perception is not determined simply by stimulus patterns. ... " (Source: Gross & McIlveen 1997)
Helmholtz put forward the idea that the key processes at work in perception are unconscious inferences.
