Introduction
Demolition is an ever-growing industry within the construction “umbrella” as it is one of the most important procedures in many projects. Within the last twenty years there has been many new developments in science and technology providing the demolition industry with more efficient methods and better equipment.
The aim of this project is to give the reader a better insight into the demolition procedures and to improve my own understanding of demolition methods.
Task One
Describe three alternative demolition methods in common use citing examples where applicable. ...
Although types of demolition that may be used in a city are described as follows:
Hand Demolition
Generally this involves reducing the building in the reverse to that it was constructed by removing elements of the structure piece by piece, using skilled labourers with and hand-held tools e. ...
The advantages of this method are apparent, it can be done in a confined space, you can be precise compared to some methods of demolition and with hand demolition it can be combined with other methods of demolition. ... Some cases of demolition require the upper storeys to be reduced by hand initially than at a certain height mechanical assistance is more appropriate and far more efficient. ...
Mechanical Demolition
As the title suggests this involves the assistance of machinery to help in the demolition process. ...
A particular type of machinery used commonly throughout the construction industry would be the demolition ball. ... The structure being demolished should be detached first from other structures and if necessary partial demolition should be completed before hand. ...
Explosives
This type of demolition in my opinion is one of the most challenging forms due to the planning and development beforehand. The use of explosives as a method of demolition is highly thought of in Britain as the most economical but is not used as often due to the doubts of local authorities or heavy built up of residential dwellings in certain areas. ...
· Early consultation with local residents advising them of the demolition. ...
Task Two
Prepare a summary outlining how the contractor should proceed with the demolition for this specific project showing appreciation of adjacent property.
Task 2
After reading the purposed brief the demolition of the site should be completed as follows:
Preliminary Procedures
Once a contract has been arranged between the client, architect and the main contractor on the site. ... These factors all must be approved before the contractor can begin demolition. ...
When the temporary support is in place demolition can begin in the upper storey of the building. ...
When demolition has reached the third floor, mechanical assistance can take over and provide a more efficient method of demolition to the ground.
