(Rousseau responsible for French Revolution!) • Idea of ‘tout dire’ – analysis, investigative spirit very much alive in 18th C France. • The artist who was doing this was doing it in a structured way in the ancien regime. • ‘Voltaire in Love’ investigators looking into experiments together: analysis and pulling things apart. • Middle of 19th C. Growth of Romanticism. Spirit of investigation. • Revolution went dramatically wrong- started to guillotine revolutionaries. • Human optimism had taken a beating. • Main aim was to find a ‘lost’ wholeness. • Now wanted to ‘dire le tout’ or speak of the whole entity; they were looking for synthesis to bring it all together.
