Today, 99% of homes have a television and children are spending more time learning about life through that television than from their own parents or teachers (Facts about Media Violence). Nowadays, in most families, both parents work and their children are sitting at home watching television and learning about sex, drugs, and violence. ... The average American child will witness over 200,000 acts of violence on television including 16,000 murders before the age of 18 (Facts about Media Violence). ... If children continuously watch this they will think that the way to deal with confrontation or problems is to use violence. Longitudinal studies tracking viewing habits and behavior patterns of a single individual found that eight year old boys, who viewed the most violent programs growing up, were the most likely to engage in aggressive and delinquent behavior by age 18 and serious criminal behavior by age 30 (Facts about media Violence).
A study shows that the programs designed for children, such as cartoons, are the most violent of all programming (Impact of Televised Violence). ... Therefore at such a young age, children are learning violence before they are learning kindness. ... For an entire half an hour all we watched was violence. Even though this isn’t going to make a child run outside and try to kill his friends, it influences them mentally that violence is fun and entertaining.
