Gesture in the Expulsion of Heliodorus is blatantly clear in its importance of uncovering the image’s narrative and consequent meaning: The gesture of the High Priest, kneeling at the alter, hands together and looking up to heaven, helps to explain the chaotic foreground scene as it suggests he is willing it on. Therefore, his obvious praying pose acts as a key part in the narrative. The gesture of the rearing horse and the angel riding it, along with stretched-out, contorted figures in motion such as the men just to the left of the horse, emphasises the drama and urgency of the characters that hunt down evil Heliodorus, showing their devotion to the Temple. ... The expulsion narrative therefore is heavily reliant to the understanding of the scene through use of gesture. ... Composition also plays a large part to emphasise gesture: the vanishing point of the perspective is embodied in the High priest praying, making the calmness of his gesture stand out among the rabble of the groups to his right and left.
