To whom it may concern, There were several considerably serious errors in the talk "Sacramental Marriage". They were serious because they do not give the Roman Catholic Church's teaching on sacraments (which comes to us from Christ). 1) He asked for a definition of sacrament. The standard catechism definition was given to him. He first caused a general doubt about the acceptability of this definition by stating, "What is wrong with this definition?" (Not--IS there something wrong with this definition, but WHAT IS WRONG?” This introduces doubts in the listeners in the capacity of the church to teach FREE FROM ERROR. 2) He then brought up specific attacks on the definition of sacrament as understood by the church. The church's definition is, "A material or visible sign, instituted by Christ, to confer or give grace." A) He said calling it a material or visible sign detracts from the internal workings of the sacrament. This could sound reasonable (on the surface), until we consider that the internal workings of the sacrament are referred to in the "confers grace" part. This one part, taken individually, would most certainly be lacking in describing parts of a sacrament. The definition as a whole perfectly describes a sacrament, but by attacking each part individually, the impression can be made that the definition is inadequate or WRONG. B) Someone, in answer to his question: "WHAT is wrong with this sacrament" exclaimed, "Instituted by Christ." He vigorously nodded his head and agreed with them.
