Thesis statement: Mass media such as television can influence Americans’ opinions and beliefs based on what they see and hear in the media. Topic sentence A: Although it is true that the media is not effective in telling people what to think, it possesses great power in influencing what people think about 1. Tend to give less attention to news 2. News are very selective with what they are going to report 3. Television is not as simple as that Topic sentence B: The half-hour news shows that are broadcast on most television networks only contain twenty minutes of actual news, the other ten minutes being devoted to commercial advertising. 1. Cause tension 2. Sometimes they are not telling the actual news 3. Television is the main source of news for most people Topic sentence C: Because the mass media, especially television, is the only source that the majority of the population has for receiving news, it is important to examine to what extent people retain the information that they are constantly being bombarded with. 1. Those who read their news were able to cite more reasons for their choices than those who got their news from watching television 2. Television does little to enhance the political consciousness of the people Conclusion: The ability to influence the minds and decisions of the American people lies in large part, with the media. Distortions of fact, and other devices used by the media in the dissemination of information to the people are bound to continue Dreams and Shattered Expectations. Most of us have dreams that we wish it could happen but in reality we know it is impossible. Dick Gregory, author of the article “Shame,” Kurt Vonnegut, author of the article “Harrison Bergeron,” and Woody Allen author of the article “ The Kugelmass Episode,” show how one’s dream could led to disillusionment.
