I, too, am a proponent of stem cell research. Like my classmates who have already posted, I think stem cell research has the potential to do much more good than harm. Not surprisingly, my genetics background and interest in birth defects research lead me to believe that stem cell research is critical. ... Like abortion, religion, and politics stem cell research will always be debatable. ... It won’t be easy, and quite frankly it is probably impossible, but we must strive to do our best to make sure that stem cell research is used to benefit mankind, not harm mankind.
This November will mark the 5th anniversary of the successful isolation of stem cells from human embryos and aborted fetuses. Initially, stem cells were very limited, "fated" to become only a small range of cell types and tissues in one organ. Now, less than five years later, stem cells are capable of being "coaxed" to become cell types and tissues of entirely different organs than those from which they were originated.
