From the case, it seemed that Barco dominated the graphics segment of projectors market. Typically, Sony was positioned below Barco’s in term of performance (scan rate, brightness, image quality and resolution). One mistake that Barco probably made was the misperception of Sony’s ability to enter the graphics market and/or timing of such market penetration. Given that and Barco’s dependence on Sony Components’ tubes –Barco was limited in the ability to negotiate a better price for tubes and it was likely to lag behind Sony in terms of application of new tubes for their products (for example the case of BD600)
In that situation and especially in the wake of Sony’s launch of 1270, it was likely that Barco market share in the graphics segment would be taken away at least in the short run when product development at Barco couldn’t catch up with what Sony offered to the market.
