“The Very Rich Man”
Dorothy Parker
He’d have the best, and that was none too good,
No barrier could hold, before his terms,
He lies below, correct in cypress wood,
And entertains the most exclusive worms
From our inception, we are told how great it is to be rich, if not from our family, friends, and teachers, then from TV, magazines, and newspaper ads. We used to be enthralled watching Robin Leach’s Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous; today we can’t get enough of MTV’s Cribs. ... Dorothy Parker reiterates that sentiment in her poem, “The Very Rich Man.” When she writes, “He’d have the best, and that was none too good,” she means that no matter what material goods this man has, he will not be satisfied.
