An important problem in the world today is the situation in Colombia in which many people are getting killed and kidnapped by paramilitary groups. The book this relates to is Kaffir Boy. Throughout the book, the whites in South Africa were mistreating the black people. Similarly, there have been many cases of murders and “disappearances” caused by paramilitaries and the guerrillas opposing them (Human rights abuses in Colombia). In fact, during the last ten years, Colombia has actually gone backwards in guaranteeing social and economic rights. (Leech). Although Colombia has the worst human rights record in the western hemisphere, the United States has already given almost $300 million to the Colombian military, showing a lack of concern to how the country is treating its citizens (Human Rights Abuses in Colombia). Both the Colombian and American governments should show more concern for human rights and send more people to help. One of the problems in Colombia is that people are being killed and tortured. Human rights defenders and trade unionists are constantly being threatened, killed, and intimidated. Carlos Castano, the leader of the largest paramilitary group, has said that guerrillas have infiltrated the human rights organizations and anyone associated with the organization could be a target for paramilitaries (Human Rights Abuses in Colombia).
