Mama, the matriarch of the Younger family, is the most nurturing character in the play. All she ever wanted to do was to make her children happy and provide for them. She commands great respect from her family members, and in turn, demands that they respect themselves and take pride in their dreams. For her, although money is useful, dreams are more important than material wealth. Throughout the play, she stuck to her moral boundaries and her embedded Christian beliefs. When Beneatha insists on using the Lord’s name in vain and claims that He doesn’t even exist, Mama reprimands her sternly, and ensures that Beneatha recognizes the authority of the household. Mama “slaps her powerfully across the face”, and makes her repeat, “In my mother’s house there is still God.” However, she was also quite a gentle and sensitive mother.
